Caryn’s Story

Caryn Case Story Post Header

A house fire marked the beginning of a challenging period for Caryn* and her family. While they continued living in their damaged home, fate dealt another blow – Caryn was struck by a car, leaving her temporarily unable to work. This combination of events quickly destabilized the family’s careful financial balance.

Living in a fire-damaged home while unable to work took its toll. Caryn searched persistently for affordable housing options but suitable places remained out of reach. The strain of this prolonged uncertainty weighed heavily on her as she tried to maintain stability for her family.

“I would have lost my opportunity for Section 8, and I would’ve lost all hope in finding a sense of security for my daughter,” Caryn shared, reflecting on the mounting pressure of her situation.

A quote from the story. it reads, "I would have lost my opportunity for Section 8, and I would've lost all hope in finding a sense of security for my daughter."

A Path Forward

Fortunately, Caryn was able to secure a Section 8 housing voucher.  However, with the lost hours from work and ongoing recovery from her accident, Caryn couldn’t afford the out-of-pocket cost for the security deposit. This short-term gap stood between her and the long-term affordability the voucher would provide.

Rapid Financial Support in Action

Recognizing the time-sensitive nature of the situation, Footbridge provided $1,195 to cover the security deposit. This assistance removed the last barrier between Caryn’s family and stable housing.

The impact extended beyond the immediate financial relief. “[This support has] given me a stepping stone to get my daughter into a [safer and more stable place],” Caryn explained. With secure housing established, she could focus on recovery and supporting her family.

A quote from the story. The Quote reads, "[This support has] given me a stepping stone to get my daughter into a [safer and more stable place]."

A Broader Perspective

Caryn’s experience illustrates how quickly consecutive setbacks can destabilize even carefully managed household budgets. Rapid, flexible assistance at crucial moments can help families maintain their footing and prevent temporary crises from becoming chronic instability.
